| Tips & Techniques 4: Coloring Autumn Leaves |
Growing up in the midwest, autumn has a special meaning to me. Watching the hardwoods turn to a vibrant mass of color overnight is still sharp in my memory. As a child, I would press autumn leaves and search for the perfect acorns that the squirrels had not found. Enjoy this image and preserve a bit of autumn for yourself.

| Step 1 - First Layer |
Begin with a layer of Chartreuse on the two leaves. Add Raw Umber to the acorn stem and about two thirds of the acorn caps. |
|
| |
| Step 2 - Second Layer |
| Apply Sand to the smooth part of the acorns, and begin layering color on the leaves by adding Lime Peel over most of the Chartreuse, leaving the center Chartreuse exposed. |
|
| |
| Step 3 - Developing Depth of Color |
More layering of color on the leaves, by adding Yellow Ochre working from the edge into the green. |
|
| |
| Step 4 - Deeper Color |
Now add a third layer using Mineral Orange, applied the same way as step three. |
|
| |
| Step 5 - Almost Done |
One last layer of Pumpkin givng the tip of each leaf lots of autumn color. |
|
| |
| Step 6 - The Last Touches |
Finish your image with a bit of Dark Brown on the stem, on the caps, and add a bit of color to the smooth part of the acorn. Hi-light a few of the leaf tips with a bit of Scarlet Lake to make the leaves pop. |
